Gastonia, NC

Design-Build delivery of a public works campus project focused on aligning facility improvements with the City of Gastonia’s operational needs, budget constraints, and long-term performance goals.

DETAILS

The project includes construction and targeted upgrades across a multi-building public works campus, supporting fleet and operational functions, as well as site circulation and infrastructure improvements.

Through a design-build approach, the team evaluated multiple solutions early in the process to optimize cost, constructability, and lifecycle performance. Collaboration among the owner, designer, builder, and trade partners enabled informed decision-making and alignment with project goals.
A key value-driven solution included evaluation of the fleet parking area, where alternative pavement strategies, including full-depth reclamation, generated cost savings that were reallocated to other critical facility improvements. This approach allowed the City to expand the overall scope and achieve broader project objectives without increasing the total project cost.

The project was recognized with the 2026 DBIA Project Excellence Award in the Civic/Government category (projects under $10M), reflecting a successful approach to value-driven design, collaboration, and execution. Work was coordinated within an active municipal campus, requiring phased execution to maintain uninterrupted operations throughout construction.
